Staging the Value of Fashion Heritage: La Création en Liberté – Univers de Denise et Paul Poiret at the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa

Working alongside fashion researcher Sandra Mathey Garcia-Rada, Piper co-wrote an article for the book Alaïa and Poiret: Exploring Fashion Heritage, released by the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa in 2022. They focused on the significance of the 2005 PIASA auction which reintroduced Paul Poiret to fashion history, as well as the presale exhibition hosted by Alaïa himself. While studying the resulting catalog (now a collector’s item in its own right), they explored the process of the double narrativization of Poiret’s work both artistically and commercially.

According to the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa website, this book ‘is the first book of a series of publications investigating the politics of heritage through the privileged perspective of the historical archives of the Foundation Azzedine Alaïa. The book focuses on the seminal fashion auction Univers de Paul Poiret et Denise Poiret (2005) on the wardrobe of Denise Poiret. Gathering essays, interviews with academics, curators and family members alongside unique visual and written documentation of the archive at Foundation Azzedine Alaïa, the book works as a research tool disclosing unique documents and sources in the making of Poiret heritage.’
